Car battery sizes explained: DIN, JIS and group codes used in the UAE

A car battery size code tells you the battery’s physical dimensions and terminal layout, and the label also shows its capacity (Ah) and cold cranking amps (CCA). UAE cars mostly use two systems: European DIN/EN codes such as DIN66, and Japanese JIS codes such as NS60 or 80D26L.

How to read a car battery label

Look on the top or front of the battery case. Four numbers matter when you choose a replacement.

  • Ah (ampere-hours): how much charge the battery stores, for example 60Ah or 70Ah.
  • CCA (cold cranking amps): how much current it delivers to start the engine.
  • Size code: the case dimensions, such as DIN66, NS60 or 80D26L.
  • Terminal position: which side the positive terminal sits on. A battery with the wrong layout may have cables that do not reach.

Japanese JIS codes (Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda)

A modern JIS code such as 80D26L reads as: performance rank (80), case width and height group (D), case length in centimetres (26) and terminal position (L or R). Older codes such as NS60 and N70 are still printed on many batteries sold in the UAE.

Older codeModern JIS equivalentTypical cars
NS4038B20Small hatchbacks
NS6046B24Compact sedans such as Sunny, Yaris and Corolla
NS7080D26Mid-size sedans such as Camry
N7095D31Large sedans, SUVs and 4x4s
N100115F51Large trucks and heavy 4x4s

European DIN/EN codes (German, French and many newer cars)

DIN codes such as DIN55, DIN66, DIN74, DIN80 and DIN100 roughly follow the battery’s capacity in ampere-hours. The case length grows with capacity, from the LN1 to LN6 group sizes, and most have the positive terminal on the right.

DIN100100AhLarge SUVs, 4x4s and premium cars

Can you fit a bigger battery?

A slightly higher Ah or CCA in the same case size is usually fine. A physically larger case may not fit the tray or clamp, and a different terminal layout can stretch the cables. Start-stop cars must stay on EFB or AGM; see AGM vs EFB.

Find the right size for your car

Use the car battery size chart for popular UAE cars, browse batteries by brand, or send your car model on WhatsApp and the technician brings the correct size. Every mobile battery replacement includes a fit check before installation.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions worth asking.

What does 60Ah mean on a car battery?

It means the battery stores 60 ampere-hours of charge. Higher Ah batteries suit larger engines and cars with more electrical equipment.

What is the difference between NS60 and N70?

N70 is a physically larger, higher-capacity battery than NS60. They are not interchangeable without checking the tray, clamp and cable length.

Does L or R matter in a battery code?

Yes. It marks the terminal position. Fitting the opposite layout can leave cables too short or touching the wrong terminal.
